Chandler, Ariz. – After dropping game one in heartbreaking fashion 4-3, the loss of momentum carried over to game two as Williams College went on to complete the sweep of the Yeomen with a 10-3 victory in game two.
The Yeomen were just one out away from a 3-1 win in game one, but things unraveled in the bottom of the seventh. Senior
Phil Brua, who also worked the sixth inning, was just one out away from his fourth save of the season; however, an OC error opened the flood gates for a Williams' comeback. Following the miscue, Stephen Maier roped a double to left field to score one run. James Allison would follow with a double of his own to tie it and eventually he would score the game-winning run on Pat Barren's single to right to leave the Yeomen shell shocked.
Starter
Grady Campion worked five innings of one-hit baseball that saw him allow just one unearned run in the top of the first. All of the Ephs runs in the contest were unearned as the Yeomen committed three errors in the game.
Oberlin plated a run in the top of the first on a sac fly by
Max Phinney that scored
Zach Kisley. Phinney would add another sac fly in the sixth, and
Eric Knight's two-out RBI single to left put the Yeomen in position to turn to Brua. Unfortunately things didn't workout as planned as Brua fell to 1-2 on the year despite having just 1.12 ERA in eight appearances thus far.
Kisley,
Brandon Cantrill and
Matt Fish each had two hits in the game.
After the deflating result of game one, the Yeomen struggled to regroup in game two as they had just three hits in the game.
Starter
Jason James got through just three innings as he was touched up for eight hits and five runs (four earned).
Oberlin scored one run in the third as
Ben Puterbaugh was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but Williams responded by adding two in the fourth and fifth and one in the sixth to put the game away for good.
OC did plate two in the fifth thanks to two Williams' errors.
The Yeomen will conclude their spring break tomorrow with two nine innings games. First they will take on Thomas College at 8 a.m. and then follow against Gustavus Adolphus.
