Game One Box l Game Two Box

Mesa, Ariz. – The Oberlin College baseball team used a late rally in game one, and freshman Mattie Dedoes and senior Phil Brua combined to pitch a complete game two-hit shutout in game two to give the Yeomen their second sweep in as many days with this one coming against Gustavus Adolphus College. The game one final was 11-6, while the nightcap ended 2-0.

The Yeomen pitching staff, which allowed just one earned run on the day, has posted a team ERA of 2.57 since arriving in Phoenix.

In game one the Yeomen trailed 6-3 going into the home half of the sixth inning, but the team exploded for eight runs in the inning to put the game away. Freshman Mike McDonald plated the first run of the frame with a single to left field, however, the dagger came later in the inning when Zach Kisley laid down a squeeze bunt that scored two runs as Ben Kauder, who was running on the pitch, never stopped till he came flying across the dish to make it a 9-6 Yeomen lead. Sean Cohen, Matt Fish, Max Phinney and Brandon Cantrill all had RBI's in the inning.

Four hits in the first gave Oberlin a 2-1 cushion after one complete, but Gustavus scored five unearned runs in the third thanks to three Yeomen errors in the inning.

Starter Ryan Mouch got through five innings on 79 pitches (51 strikes). He scattered eight hits and racked up four strikeouts in the no decision. Rookie southpaw Drew Karlin got the win out of the bullpen as he worked a scoreless sixth that featured two punchouts.

Kauder, Kisley, Cohen and Phinney each had two hits in the game.

In the backend of the twinbill the rookie Dedoes was simply outstanding as he kept the Gusties' hitters at bay with an array of pitches through five strong innings that saw him allow just two hits and three walks.

Brua came in to work the sixth and seventh to earn his second save of the season. He did not allow a hit as he faced the minimum thanks to a perfectly executed 5-4-3 double play following a hit batter in the sixth. The save was the eigth of his career, which is the most in school history. He passed former teammate P.J. Carter who had seven-career saves during his tenure with the Yeomen.

Oberlin pushed a run across in the third on an RBI groundout by Ben Puterbaugh that scored freshman Kevin Verne, who led off the inning with a walk. It would remain that way until the top of the seventh when Kauder would drop down a squeeze bunt to score pinch runner Robin Witjes.

Dedoes, who pitched around a one-out triple in the first, avoided another potential run from scoring in the third when Kauder gunned Cody Sukalski at the plate as he attempt to tag up on Taylor Fish's flyout to left field.

The Yeomen will play a single nine-inning game tomorrow against Middlebury College starting at 12 p.m. PST/3 p.m. EST. Fans can follow all of the action via live statistics here.
