Chandler, Ariz
. – Strong pitching and just enough hitting propelled the Oberlin College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Thomas College on Sunday afternoon at Snedigar Park in Chandler, Arizona. The Yeomen took game one 2-0 and followed with a 5-4 walk-off win in game two.

In the lid-lifter the Yeomen rode the left arm of senior tri-captain Grady Campion as he kept the Terrier hitters off balance for five strong innings, before giving way to fellow senior tri-captain Phil Brua for the final two innings as he locked down his first save of the season.

Campion, a native of Brookline, Massachusetts, surrendered just three hits while registering four punchouts. He threw just 65 pitches – 43 of which went for strikes, and recorded eight groundball outs.

The lone pair of runs in the game came in the top of third inning courtesy of an RBI single to center by Brandon Cantrill and wild pitch that allowed Ben Puterbaugh to come across the dish.

The Yeomen, who had just seven hits in the game, were led by Max Phinney's 2-for-3 effort.

It was Phinney who also proved to be the hero in game two as his sac fly to center in the bottom of the seventh plated Zach Kisley for the game-winning run.

An RBI single by Cantrill in the first and sophomore Eric Knight's first-career home run in the second gave the Yeomen an early 2-0 lead.

Yeomen starter Jason James cruised through the first three innings without giving up a hit and was pitching with a 2-1 lead, but he ran into some trouble in the fourth. Four hits and walk in the inning resulted in three runs coming across for Thomas and marked an end to James' day. All things considered he still pitched a strong four innings as he had five strikeouts along the way.

However, it was freshman Mike McDonald who did a tremendous job of the bullpen as he worked three scoreless innings en route to earning his first-career win. The Weston, Connecticut, native allowed just one hit and fanned four Terrier hitters. After a lead-off single to start the top of the sixth, McDoland was aided by a beautifully turned 6-4-3 double play that featured perfect footwork and a strong throw from freshman second baseman Sean Cohen.

The Yeomen were able to get back to even by adding single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth it was sophomore Matt Fish who came through with a clutch two-out RBI single as he served a 1-2 pitch into right field to score Cohen. In the fifth it was a sac fly by Cantrill that allowed Kisley to come home. Kisley went 3-for-3 with three stolen bases and three runs scored in the game.

In the seventh back-to-back walks to start frame set things up perfectly for the Yeomen. A sac bunt by Cantrill would move Kisley and Ben Puterbaugh into scoring position and Phinney did the rest by lifting a fly ball to medium-deep center that allowed Kisley to slide in safely at the plate for the Yeomen win.

The Yeomen return to action tomorrow at 12 p.m. PST and 3 p.m. EST with a doubleheader against Gustavus Adolphus.
