Chandler, Ariz. – The Oberlin College baseball team pounded out a season-high 14 hits in a 14-6 game-one win, but in the nightcap the bats went silent as they found themselves on the wrong end of a 2-1 pitchers' duel against Middlebury College on Saturday afternoon.
In game one, senior
Brandon Cantrill picked up his first win of the season as he worked six innings and allowed just five hits. After a 32-pitch first inning that saw him allow two runs, Cantrill settled down the rest of the way and finished with four strikeouts on just 86 pitches.
Senior
Ben Puterbaugh and freshman
Zach Kisley combined for four hits and nine RBI's in the lid-lifter. The pair gave the Yeomen a 3-2 lead in the third as Kisley singled up the middle to score fellow rookie
Steve DiNanno and then Puterbaugh followed with a perfectly place triple down the right field line to score two more runs – all of which came with two outs.
The Yeomen continued to pour it on offensively as they plated two in the fifth and exploded for seven runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Kisley and Puterbaugh each had two RBI's in the inning, while
Matt Fish,
Ben Kauder and
Max Phinney each had one. Kauder and Fish would also add RBI's in the seventh for good measure.
Game two took just 1:25 as Yeomen starter
Eric Knight and Middlebury starter Nick Angstman were just dealing.
Knight was the tough-luck loser as his Yeomen teammates provided just one run and six hits of support. The sophomore from Scottsdale, Arizona, threw a gem as went the distance and struck out seven along the way. He walked just one, while scattering eight hits. Of his 112 pitches, 78 went for strikes.
A failed picked off attempt in the first resulted in Middlebury plating an unearned run, however, the Yeomen would get back to even in the second thanks to DiNanno's triple down the right field line to score fellow rookie
Mike Mcdonald.
The Panthers (1-1) would scratch out another run in the third to make it a 2-1 game, and at that time little did anyone know it would end that way.
Oberlin (2-5) had some opportunities throughout the game, but had two players picked off at first, which short-circuited two potential run-scoring opportunities in the first and fourth innings.
Another tough break came in the third inning with a hit-and-run on, Puterbaugh roped a line drive to center, but
Zach Jaspers was already rounding second when the ball was caught as he eventually got doubled-up at first to end the inning.
With two out in the fifth, Fish tried to make something happen by attempting to steal second, but he was gunned down. The Yeomen went down in order in both the sixth and seventh to allow the Panthers to escape with the split.
Angstman needed just 73 pitches to get through the Yeomen line-up. He struck out three and walked two in the complete-game win.
The Yeomen go back to work tomorrow at 11 a.m. PST/2 p.m. EST with a doubleheader against Thomas College. Fans can follow all of the action via live stats
