Canton, Ohio – Both the Oberlin College men's and women's swimming and diving teams got off to a great start on day one of the 2011 NCAC Championships.

The Yeowomen currently rest in fifth place with 213 points, while the Yeomen sit sixth with 199 total tallies.

“I thought we put together a great effort with many strong swims,” Head Coach Mark Fino said. “I felt both teams were very well prepared and ready to compete.”

The Yeowomen charge was spearheaded by junior Jane McIntyre who placed 11th overall in the 200-yard IM with lifetime best mark of 2:10.80. The timestamp is also good for third best all-time in school history.

In the 50-yard free it was a pair of first-years who secured 29 total points for the Yeowomen. Annika Stridh touched in at 25.21 to place 12th while Katie Dunn followed closely behind at 25.46 to finish one spot back.

In the 500-yard free junior Kate Melanson was just tenths of a second off from a school record as she flowed through the water in 5:13.94 to place 15th overall. However, it was senior Jenny Meltz who actually broke the school record by clocking in at 5:13.44 in the C-Final. The old school-best mark was held by former OC standout Bryne Ulmschneider whose time of 5:13.73 stood since 2006.

On the men's side the 500-yard free is where they did a lot of their work on the night as three Yeomen placed in the top 14. Rookie Chris Pickens checked in first out of the trio with a time of 4:42.62 to place 11th overall. The swim is the third fastest in school history and is also the fastest OC time in the event since 2003. Teammates Dimitri Macris (4:53.08) and Jon Vimr (4:54.41) ended 13th and 14th, respectively.

Oberlin also had three point producers in the 200-yard IM with Nick Lashway leading the group in 19th place at 2:00.84. Dylan Jordan (2:01.56) and Corey Spiro (2:02.32) were 21st and 22nd.

Rookie Jordan Attwood also had a fine night off the 3-meter board, earning 25 team points by placing fifth overall with a score of 369.70.

Day two preliminary action will get underway tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m.
