Series Information ...
Oberlin trails the all-time series against the Big Red 16-47-3 … The first meeting between the two schools came all the way back in 1911 when the Yeomen edged the Big Red in a 9-0 defensive battle … In the 2010 matchup, the two teams were in a defensive battle for much of the game … The Yeomen defense was outstanding on the day, limiting Denison to just 191 total yards of offense… The defense forced seven punts and recorded five tackles for a loss, three of which were sacks… The offense was led by
Robin Witjes who had three receptions for 74 yards and two touchdowns…
Drew Mixter had 102 yards on the ground, for his second 100 yard rushing performance of his career…
Josh Mandel finished 10-of-20 for 150 yards and two touchdowns…
Cory Kidd connected with Witjes on a double reverse pass that would ice the game.
Scouting the Big Red …
Denison comes into Saturday's matchup riding a three game losing streak … After winning three of their first five games of the season, the Big Red have dropped games to the likes of Chicago, Allegheny and Wabash … The Big Red offense is led by their junior quarterback Max Paulus. He is 149-241 on the year for 1770 yards, 16 touchdowns, and only seven interceptions… Runningback Sam Fioroni leads the ground attack with 825 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He also leads the team in receptions, with 33, and has caught two touchdown passes… Paulus' go to receiver has been Braden Layer, who has 26 receptions for a team high 403 yards and two scores. He averages 15.5 yards per catch. On the goal line, look for Lucas Graham to be the go to target, he has 4 touchdowns on 20 receptions this year… The Defense is led by linebacker Adam Frudden, who has a team high 52 total tackles, five of which are for a loss, and two picks. Defensive lineman Lan Hartfield has 36 total tackles, with a team high 17 for a loss and a team high 5 sacks.
Gun Slingin'…
Last week's historic passing performance set two Oberlin College records. Quarterback
Josh Mandel threw for 454 yards, shattering the previous record by 87 yards. The previous record was held by quarterback's coach
Greg Mangan. The second record was Mandel's 63 passing attempts. The previous record was 62. Any time a school record at Oberlin is broken, it is special because the program has been around since 1891.
Pass and Catch…
Two Oberlin receivers had career days against Washington last week.
Robin Witjes had a stellar day of 13 receptions and 176 yards. Both of those statistics rank third all time at Oberlin. Senior
Dan Weintraub showed the NCAC that he had arrived. He caught five passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns. All three of those were career highs, and he nearly doubled his yardage for the year in last week's game.
Another 1000…
In the notes against Case we mentioned that
Josh Mandel was approaching 2,000 passing yards in his career. After last week's explosion, he is now only 377 yards away from 3,000 in his career. He is also approaching 5th all time, which is 3,041 held by Gregg Heiden, which was set from 1976-1979.
Sack Lunch…
Junior defensive lineman
Clay Eaton is leading the NCAC in sacks after recording one last week. He has 6.5 this season, making his career total at 15. 15 career sacks is good for third all time at Oberlin. Last week's tackle of the quarterback pushed him past Vinnie Hachigian, who had 14.5 from 2001-04 With 13 more career games, he only needs 7.5 to tie Chris Pasani for the all time record, which is 22.5. Going into Saturday, Denison had given up 29 sacks as a team, so look for Eaton to take a few steps closer to the record.
Rushing Attack…
Despite last week's impressive passing attack, the Yeomen only managed four yards rushing. Coming into this week, Denison gives up 103.1 yards per game on the ground. Look for offensive coordinator Alan Estep to get
Justin Williams and
Drew Mixter involved in the game early, and establish a solid ground game that could open up the play action pass in later quarters.
