Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's and women's track and field teams got their first look at the conference competition on Saturday as they played host to the annual NCAC Relay Meet at the John W. Heisman Field House.
The women totaled 79 points to finish in second place, while Ohio Wesleyan University won the event with 107 tallies. On the men's end Oberlin racked up 71.5 points to place third. Wabash claimed the top spot with 116 points, while OWU was close behind at 113.5.
In the traditional relay events, the Yeowomen displayed their dominance with victories in the 4x200 and 4x400. In the shorter of the two races Oberlin had one representative from each class combine to post a winning time of 1:50.10. It was rookie
Sophia Brancazio who led things off. She was followed by junior
Melissa Elie, senior
Amanda Miller and sophomore
Marissa Clardy. In the 4x400 it was a pair of sophomores and pair of seniors who got the job done. Clardy was followed by Miller and then sophomore
Sybil Levine and senior
Laura Vernon did the rest to record the winning mark with a season-best time of 4:07.61.
Oberlin also prevailed in 1,600 sprint medley relay. It was Elie, Vernon, Levine with first-year
Molly Martorella in the anchor position who won the race in 4:24.65.
Even more Oberlin success occurred in the field events as Vernon claimed the top spot in the pole vault by clearing 10-06. Senior classmate
Melissa DeLombaert was also victorious in the triple jump with a mark of 33-00.25.
The Yeomen continued to their early season success in the field events as
Josh Gallagher and
Jacob Fogel secured victory in the shot put relay. Gallagher's toss of 47-08 bested the rest of the field by over three feet, while Fogel was in the middle of pack at 38-03.25.
Alexander Guo and
Shawn Chrapczynski registered five points each in the men's long jump relay. Guo posted a meet-best mark of 21-00.5, while the local product Chrapczynski was fifth overall at 19-05.25.
In the traditional relay events, the Yeomen placed second in the 4x400 and third in the 4x200. The tandem of
Solomon Turner,
Peter Morris,
Quinn Hull and
Reshard El-Shair flew through the 4x400 in 3:28.96. It was the grouping of Chrapczynski, Morris, Terrence Embry and El-Shair who combined to complete the 4x200 in 1:34.20.
The Oberlin track and field teams will be right back in action at the John W. Heisman Field House on Friday night when they host the Crimson and Gold Invite.
