Box Score
Wooster, Ohio – Big plays and early miscues hindered the Oberlin College football team as it fell to The College of Wooster 31-14 on Saturday afternoon at John P. Papp Stadium.
Oberlin's offense was never really in rhythm for most of the game as they recorded just 229 total yards and had just 11 first downs. On the flip side the Scots racked up 476 total yards and went 11-of-18 on third down.
“We had our chances, but just made too many mistakes and didn't play Yeomen football today,” Head Coach
Jeff Ramsey said. “We can't turn the ball over like we did, but give the guys credit for battling to the end. Now it is time for us to go back to work on the practice field and correct these mistakes.”
Coming off an impressive performance against the Lords, quarterback
Josh Mandel was held in check as he finished 13-for-23 for 160 yards and two scores – both of which went to
Ryan Harvey. Harvey caught five balls for 90 yards. For the second straight game OC also struggled on the ground with just 41 yards rushing.
Both teams looked very stagnant on offense during the first quarter, but Oberlin was unable to capitalize as Mandel was picked off on the first three possessions for the Yeomen.
The Scots finally posted the first points of the game with four minutes left in the second quarter when Robert Flagg busted off a 20-yard TD run.
On the opening drive of the third quarter, Wooster would make it 14-0 on a 35-yard hook-up between Richard Barnes and Jordan McIntyre.
However, the Yeomen wouldn't go down without a fight as they took advantage of a short field which resulted in seven points when Mandel and Harvey would connect from 16 yards out to put Oberlin right back into the game.
Unfortunately, the momentum was short-lived as on the ensuing possession Flagg ripped off a 58-yard TD run of the first play from scrimmage.
Once again the Yeomen would respond with a 9-play, 62-yard drive in 4:18 that ended in another Mandel-to-Harvey score – this time for 17 yards away to make it a 21-14 game with 2:52 left in the third.
In the fourth quarter the Scots controlled the clock and would add a field goal and late touchdown. On Oberlin's first possession of the frame they would turn the ball over downs as the Wooster defense stopped them twice on both 3rd-and-4th and 1 on the Scots' 35-yard line.
Matt Richard led the Yeomen defense with 12 tackles, while
Derrick Dennis added nine in the loss.
The Yeomen return to action next week at Hiram College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
