Lorain, Ohio –
Critical errors and an all-round flat performance by the Oberlin College baseball team resulted in them losing both ends of a doubleheader to Bluffton University on Tuesday night at the Pipeyard in Lorain, Ohio. The Beavers took game one 8-4 and held on for a 5-4 win in the nightcap.

Nothing can sum up how the night went for the Yeomen more than the fact that game two starter Grady Campion took the loss without allowing a single earned run as four Oberlin miscues led to all five of Bluffton's runs.

In the nightcap Oberlin appeared to be ready to salvage a split, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, but would be shutout the rest of the way. A double by Ben Puterbaugh and single by Brandon Cantrill resulted Oberlin's first run. Ben Kauder's picture perfect bunt single to score Puterbaugh marked the second OC tally and a two-out error led to two more runs.

Campion was cruising along but a crucial two-out error extended the inning and resulted in three unearned runs for Bluffton. In the fourth it was more of the same as two OC misplays and two hits resulted in two more runs and a 5-4 Beavers lead.

The Yeomen threatened in the home-half of the fifth as Jason James and Puterbaugh started off the inning with back-to-back singles, but Beavers relief pitcher Cody McPherson would strike out the next three hitters in order to short-circuit any potential rally.

Phil Brua came in to work the final three innings and was his dominant self as he allowed just two hits. After striking out the side in the sixth, he fanned the first hitter in the seventh to finish with four K's.

In game one the Yeomen (14-8) managed just four hits and fell victim to a five-run second inning by the Beavers (9-14).

Bluffton pounded out five hits in the second and took advantage of yet another Oberlin error to add a single tally in the third to take a 6-0 lead.

Oberlin tried to claw its way back in the fourth, posting four runs in a frame that featured a two-run double down the left field line by Eric Knight and an RBI by Cantrill. Unfortunately, the rally got halted as Pat Bourke hit into a 6-4-3 double play.

From then on Max Phinney would provide the lone Yeomen hit with a double to left field, meanwhile the Beavers would tack on two more runs for good measure in the seventh.

Junior Ryan Mouch started the game and took the loss after pitching 4.2 innings, surrendering nine hits, six runs (four earned) and four walks. He did register five punch-outs along the way.

Oberlin will look to get back on track on Thursday afternoon when it travels to Denison University for a single nine-inning affair. Fist pitch is set for 5 p.m.
