Miscues Comeback to Bite Yeomen

Jack Dunn pitched great, but earned a no decision in game one.
Game One Box l Game Two Box

Meadville, Pa. –
It has been problematic all season and once again it manifested itself in the most critical point of the year as two late-inning errors allowed the Allegheny College Gators to rally from a 3-1 deficit to win game one 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, knocking the Yeomen out of the NCAC Tournament picture. Allegheny used the momentum to win game two 9-1.

Oberlin finished with four miscues in the lid-lifter, but none bigger than the one that came with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to allow the Gators to score the game-winning run.

Allegheny also benefited from a two-out error in the bottom of the fifth, which resulted in the tying run coming across the dish.

Despite only having four hits in the game, the Yeomen had the lead going into the fifth inning.

Junior Pat Bourke put the Yeomen on the board with a two-out RBI single in the second that plated Max Phinney who belted a double earlier in the inning.

The Gators tied the game in the third, but Oberlin responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Jason James got things going with a double and Ben Puterbaugh walked. Following a sac bunt, OC would plate both runners on an RBI groundout by Phinney and a picture perfect squeeze bunt by Ben Kauder.

In the fifth the Gators got back to even, using a single and double to start the inning. The first run came across on a sac fly, but following a groundout to third, a crucial error resulted in the tying run to come across.

Allegheny started the seventh with a single, but yet another OC misplay resulted in Ben Lowmaster going to second base on the play. A sac bunt and fielder's choice in-between two intentional walks resulted in the bases being full with two outs, before the walk-off error.

Jack Dunn pitched with pride as he tossed five innings while scattering seven hits and three runs (two earned). The Lake Havasu, Arizona, native also fanned seven hitters along the way.

Phil Brua was the tough-luck loser as he worked the final 1.2 innings that featured a scoreless sixth.

In the nightcap it was more of the same as Oberlin mustered just four hits and committed five errors.

The score was tied at 1-1 after three complete, but the Gators busted out for four runs in the fourth and add four more between the fifth and sixth innings to secure the win.

Oberlin (18-18, 8-8 NCAC) has three more games remaining on its schedule. The Yeomen will host John Carroll University in a single nine-inning game on Wednesday, before taking on Ohio Northern next week. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. from Dill Field.
