Lorain, Ohio – The Oberlin College baseball team tied a school record for wins in a season by salvaging a doubleheader split with Case Western Reserve University on Wednesday night at The Pipeyard. After dropping game one 14-2, the Yeomen bounced back with a 5-3 win in the nightcap.

The 2010 version of the Yeomen, which is now 17-10 overall, matched the win total of the 2007 squad that finished the year at 17-23.

In the win the tandem of Ben Puterbaugh and Brandon Cantrill did the damage at the plate, combining for four hits and three RBI's. Rookie Eric Knight (1-1) also recorded his first career win on the mound as he worked four innings and allowed just two hits and one run while racking up three punchouts. Phil Brua tossed the final three innings to earn his sixth save of the year.

In the bottom of the third Cantrill's double off the wall in left center scored Puterbaugh to mark the first run of the game.

Case Western (17-16) would tie the game in the top of the fourth as Matt Keen led off the inning with a walk and would later score on a two-out single by Sam Alexander.

Oberlin would answer back with a three-spot in the home-half of the fourth on a sac fly by Ben Kauder and a two-out two-run double to left center by Puterbaugh.

The Spartans fought back with two runs in the fifth, but Brua settled down and benefited from a beautiful 1-4-3 double play that featured a snow-cone scoop on the backend from Jack Dunn.

In the seventh, Steven Bills led off the inning with a double, but Brua responded with a strikeout of Clay Hurley and induced a pop out and ground out of the next two hitters to preserve the win.

In game one, every ball the Spartans put in play seemed to find a hole as they finished with 14 hits and scored eight of their runs in the final two innings.

The Yeomen had six hits in the game, unfortunately one of those was not by Puterbaugh as his hitting streak was halted at 19 games.

It was 2-2 after the first inning and Oberlin trailed just 6-2 after five complete, but the Yeomen bats went silent down stretch - going hitless in the final three innings.

The Yeomen now prepare for a critical conference series against The College of Wooster. The Scots and Yeomen will play a four-game set at Dill Field with doubleheaders scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. First pitch on each day will be at 1 p.m.
