Chandler, Ariz. – The Oberlin College baseball team dropped its spring break finale to Williams College 16-11 on Thursday afternoon in Chandler, Arizona.
The Yeomen and Ephs, who combined for 30 hits, were tied at 11 going into the seventh inning, but Ephs rallied for five runs in the bottom of the frame to earn the win.
Despite the loss, Oberlin still had a very successful left coast swing by going 7-3 and returns home with a record of 11-5 overall.
Oberlin didn't wait long before getting the party started, using five hits and one Ephs' error to score five runs in the top of the first inning.
Brandon Cantrill and
Max Phinney came through with RBI's in the inning. In his first at-bat of the season, junior
Ryan Mouch also added a run-producing single up the middle to score
Ben Kauder.
Unfortunately for the Yeomen, Williams answered right back with four runs in the home-half of the inning.
Doubles by Kauder and Cantrill in the second led to two more Yeomen runs, but once again the Ephs would answer with three of their own to tie the game at seven. Oberlin rookie starter Gregory D'Agincourt retired just one batter in the third inning before being lifted for
Drew Mixter.
Matt Fish came through with an RBI single in the Yeomen third, and in the fourth Oberlin would execute an intentional first-and-third pickoff play that allowed
Ben Puterbaugh to race in from third before Kauder got tagged out in the pickle.
Cantrill and Kauder would again provide RBI's for the Yeomen in the sixth, but by the time the bottom of the frame was over the two teams were knotted at 11.
In the Ephs big seventh inning, they used four hits and took advantage of two Oberlin errors. Meanwhile the Yeomen were retired in order from the seventh inning on.
Cantrill finished 3-for-5 with two RBI's and two runs scored, while Kauder ended 2-for-4 with three RBI's. #Pat Bourker, Fish, and Puterbaugh all had two hits in the game.
The Yeomen won't have much rest as they go right back to work on the weekend when they host a critical NCAC series against Kenyon College with doubleheaders scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Dill Field. First pitch on each day will be at 1 p.m. and fans can follow all the action via
