Chandler, Ariz. – The Oberlin baseball team defeated Gustavus Aldophus 5-4 in game one, but the Gusties halted a five-game winning streak by salvaging a split with a 7-3 win in game two on Wednesday afternoon at Snedigar Park in Chandler, Arizona.
In the lid-lifter it was rookie
Zach Jaspers who got the Oberlin offense going with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Junior
Ben Puterbaugh was the only other Yeomen to register two hits in the contest.
Senior southpaw
Jack Dunn got the start on the mound and worked five innings to garner his second win of the season. The Lake Havasu native, allowed just five hits and two runs while fanning three Gusties along the way. Junior
Phil Brua continues to be lights-out on the bump as he pitched the final two innings to earn his third save. He pitched around three Oberlin errors – including two in the seventh and left five runners on base to preserve the Yeomen's fourth one-run win of the season.
Following an RBI groundout in the fourth by
Ben Kauder and two-run top of the fifth by the Gusties, the Yeomen put together a three-run spurt in the bottom fifth. After leading off with a double to start the inning,
Max Phinney was sacrificed to third and then scored on a squeeze bunt by
Brad Hantler. Back-to-back two-out doubles by Jaspers and
Jason James led to another OC run, while Puterbuagh capped off the scoring with a run-scoring single to right field.
Due to the Oberlin miscues, the Gustavus were able to add single tallies in the sixth and seventh, but Brua was able to limit the damage.
In the nightcap the Yeomen did knock out 12 hits, but could not get the timely hit when they needed it – stranding nine base runners in the game.
Freshman
Robin Witjes joined Jaspers, Puterbaugh, and Kauder as those with two hits.
Oberlin fell behind 2-0 in the first, but tied the game in the top of the third on an RBI double by Puterbaugh and run-scoring single by
Brandon Cantrill.
Gustavus responded with a single tally in the third and four in the fourth to chase Oberlin starter
Eric Knight out of the game while taking a 7-2 lead.
OC (11-4) tried to fight back but left six runners on base over its final four at-bats while scratching out a single run in the seventh.
Oberlin concludes its spring break tomorrow with a single nine-inning game against Williams College.
