Chandler, Ariz. – The Oberlin College baseball team continues to win – and in different ways – as the Yeomen pounded out a doubleheader sweep of Thomas College, taking game one 13-10 before following with an 8-6 win in the nightcap on Tuesday afternoon in Chandler, Arizona.
Oberlin, which ran its record to 10-3 overall, has won six out of its last seven games and has registered four twin-bill sweeps on the young season.
“We are playing loose and with a great attitude,” Head Coach
Eric Lahetta said. “Everyone has confidence in one another that they can do the job we need them to do no matter what the situation.”
In game one junior
Brandon Cantrill was able to break out of a mini slump by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. The Collins, Ohio, native also worked the final 2.1 innings to lockdown his first of two saves on the day.
Toledo product
Ben Kauder continued his torrid tear at the plate as he was 2-for-3 with a double, triple, RBI and four runs scored. Rookie
Zach Jaspers was also 3-for-5 in the game.
OC scored three times in the third and four in the fourth to lead 7-2. The Terriers would battle back to make it 10-8 in the fifth, but the Yeomen offense would not let up and Cantrill shut the door to preserve the win.
Oberlin used a five-run fifth inning to prevail in game two. The frame featured a triple by Kauder and a gratuitous two-run home run by
Max Phinney.
Ben Puterbaugh and
Phil Brua joined Kauder and Phinney as those who had a pair of hits in the game.
Cantrill came out of the pen to work the final 1.2 innings and recorded three of his five outs via the strikeout.
The Yeomen will have a chance to match or surpass the school-record winning streak of six games in a row when they take on Gustavus Aldophus tomorrow in doubleheader action. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m. EST.
