Scottsdale, Ariz. – The Oberlin College baseball team needed extra frames to win game one 3-2 in nine innings, but could not complete the doubleheader sweep of St. Mary's University, dropping the nightcap 9-6 on Sunday afternoon in Scottsdale, Arizona.
In the lid-lifter it was sophomore
Brad Hantler who provided the game-winning heroics as his two-out single up the middle scored pinch runner
Pat Bourke from second base.
A fielding error by the Athletics' shortstop extended the inning and allowed
Eric Knight reach base before being lifted for by Bourke.
Max Phinney continued his hot start to the trip with a single to left – giving Hantler the opportunity to be the hero.
Junior
Phil Brua got the win in relief by throwing four innings of hitless ball while fanning four Cardinals along the way.
Oberlin (6-3) got on the board first when junior
Brandon Cantrill belted his third home run of the season - this one being a solo shot to left field.
The Cardinals would score two runs in the fourth, but the Yeomen would quickly even things up in the fifth as senior
Zach Berman went opposite field with a run-producing double down the left field line.
After shutting down the Cardinals in order in the seventh and eighth innings, Brua pitched around a walk, an error and a hit batter to escape unscathed in the top of the ninth.
In game two, Oberlin squandered an early 3-0 lead and was plagued by a six-run fifth by the Cardinals.
Ben Puterbaugh stayed locked in at plate going 4-for-4 with two RBI's, while classmate
Ben Kauder and sophomore
Jason James also added a pair of hits each.
The three-run third by the Yeomen featured an RBI triple by
Zach Jaspers that sent fellow rookie
Matt Fish across the dish.
The Cardinals scrapped out a pair of runs in the fourth and used six hits in the fifth to take an 8-3 lead.
OC tried to battle back, scoring a run in the fifth on
Ben Kauder's RBI single to center field and would add two more in the sixth on run-producing hits by James and Puterbaugh.
Unfortunately, it was too little to late for the Yeomen to comeback and steal the win.
The Yeomen go right back to work tomorrow in the Arizona sun with a doubleheader against Hamline University. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m. EST.
