Delaware, Ohio – First-year sensation
Allison Anderson scored 26 points and classmate
Kelly Warlich added her second straight double-double, but it wasn't quite enough as the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops were able to outlast the Oberlin College women's basketball team 62-56 in NCAC Quarterfinal action on Tuesday night.
Oberlin, which was the seventh seed in the tournament, benefited from cold shooting by the second-seeded Bishops who shot just 31.5-percent (23-of-73) overall and 1-of-20 from long range. However, the free throw line is where the game was decided as OWU cashed in 15-of-20 (75%) charity tosses – including four in the closing seconds, while the Yeowomen went to the stripe just three times and made two.
In addition to her game-high point total, Anderson added nine rebounds and three assists. Warlich finished with 10 points and 11 boards, while fellow rookie
Ellen Neumann added eight points off the bench in her 12 minutes of work.
“This game was a true testament to how far our team has come in the last two years,” Head Coach
Kerry Jenkins said. “I couldn't be more proud of everyone on this team and the effort they put forth this season.”
The first half was played extremely close with no more than seven points separating the two squads throughout the frame. The stanza featured five lead changes and four ties, but the Bishops took the slightest of margins into the locker room at 32-31.
In the second half, OWU built its lead up to 14, 53-39, with 5:35 left to play as the Yeowomen suffered through a six-and-half minute scoreless streak. However, this team wouldn't go down without a fight as they ripped off a 17-5 run of their own to make it a 58-56 game with 43 seconds left to play.
After using most of the shot clock, the Bishops' Lauren Gentene would trigger a jumper that was off the mark, but Rachel Seibel came down with a huge offensive rebound for the Bishops, forcing the Yeowomen to foul with just 10 ticks left. OWU's Pam Quigney, who shot just 1-of-10 from the floor, would connect on both freebies and Tyler Cordell would add two more to secure the win.
Oberlin and Ohio Wesleyan each recorded 42 rebounds in the game, but the Yeowomen were plagued by 26 turnovers that translated into 26 points for the victors.
