Oberlin, Ohio – Behind a gutsy effort from
Allison Anderson and all-around great performances by
Syrea Thomas and
Ellen Neumann, the Oberlin College women's basketball team was able to outlast the visiting Tartans of Carnegie Mellon 65-58 on Saturday afternoon.
Anderson, who was not feeling 100 percent due to illness, toughed it out to score a game-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds, seven assists and just one turnover. Most of her damage came at the charity stripe where she went 12-of-13.
Thomas finished with 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Neumann also netted a career-best 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
“This was a big bounce back win for us,” Head Coach
Kerry Jenkins said. “After having a let down on Wednesday, we were able to come back here today and play a very effective game.”
The Yeowomen (3-3) trailed 27-23 at the half and went down by as many as eight points on two separate occasions in the second session. Trailing 53-45 with 7:44 remaining, the Yeowomen used a 7-0 spurt that was capped off by an old fashion 3-point play by Neumann to get within in one at the 4:34 mark.
After going down 58-54,
Kelly Warlich cashed in a deep 3-pointer and Anderson followed with an old school 3-point play to give the Yeowomen a 60-58 cushion with just 1:32 left. It was the first lead for Oberlin since the 15:24 mark of the opening half, when it led 5-2.
Anderson would then preserve the win with five straight free throws over the final 35 seconds.
Oberlin made 31.7 percent (20-of-63) of its shots, which included an 8-of-27 effort (29.6%) from downtown. The Tartans checked in at 33.9 percent (21-of-62) overall and went 11-of-28 (39.3%) from 3-point land.
The Yeowomen will go right back to work on Monday night when local rival Case Western Reserve comes to town for a 7 p.m. battle.
