Box Score
Oberlin, Ohio – Senior
Syrea Thomas scored a season-high 22 points, but Oberlin College shot just 29.5 percent as it fell to Bluffton University, 68-51, in the home opener on Tuesday night.
Thomas shot 8-of-18 from the floor and was the only Yeowoman to make a shot from beyond the arc, hitting 4-of-10 triple-tries. However, Oberlin missed its other eight attempts from 3-point land.
The normally prolific scoring duo of
Allison Anderson and
Kelly Warlich combined to go 6-of-26 in the loss. Anderson, who battled foul trouble all game long, did manage to net 10 points. Dating back to last year she has now scored in double figures in 13 out of her last 14 games.
The Yeowomen (1-2) had no answer for the Beavers' Brittany Stegmaier as she finished with a game-high 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting – including a 5-of-7 effort on threes.
The score was tied at 19 at the 8:20 of the mark of opening half, but from that point one the Yeowomen were held without a field goal until a Warlich knocked down a jumper with 1:33 remaining in the half. During that stretch Bluffton (2-1) would build its lead to as many as 13, but a 6-0 OC spurt to close out the half made it 34-27 at the break.
After falling behind by 11, 38-27, An
Allison Gannon lay-up at the 11:57 mark of the second half would get Oberlin back within striking distance at 45-38. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter Stegmaier would dial in on one of her five triple-hits to make it a 12-point game and it would remain a double-digit margin the rest of the way.
The Yeowomen cashed in nine field goals in each half to finish 18-of-61 from the floor. Meanwhile, Bluffton connected at a 49.1 percent (26-of-53) clip, which included an impressive 8-of-17 (47.1%) effort from deep.
The Yeowomen will look to get back on track when they travel out west to take on former NCAC member Earlham College on Saturday at 1 p.m. Head Coach
Kerry Jenkins is undefeated in his Oberlin career against the Quakers.
