Box Score
Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin College scored two touchdowns in the final 1:29 of the game, but it wasn't enough as the Allegheny College Gators held on for a 17-14 win in the season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Savage Stadium.
It appeared as if the Yeomen were going to be shutout by the Gators for the straight season, however, the high-powered offense finally came to life in the closing minutes as senior quarterback
Joey Zebelian marched Oberlin right down the field on a 6-play, 74-yard drive that ended in a 21-yard TD catch by
Robin Witjes to open the door slightly.
With 1:29 remaining the door opened even more as
Drew Mixter recovered the ensuing on-side kick for the Yeomen. This time Oberlin would need just five plays and 29 seconds to find paydirt as Zebelian threw a beautiful ball down the near sideline to
Adam Niec for a 28-yard score. The drive was also aided by a personal foul call against the Gators.
On Oberlin's second on-side kick attempt, they elected to try a pouch kick to the middle part of the field – where no Allegheny players were positioned – but the kick went way short and the Gators were able to call for a fair catch to preserve the win.
Highlighting the day for the Yeomen was junior
Cory Kidd who punted seven times for 281 yards – including a career-long 73-yarder - to finish the season with a school-record average of 40.6 yards per punt. The Wellington, Ohio, native surpassed Dave Bruno whose punts covered an average of 40.4 yards in 1982.
Oberlin finished the day with 298 yards of offensive; with 139 yards of that total coming on its final two drives. The Gators proved why they were the best-run defense in the NCAC as they limited the Yeomen to just 26 yards rushing on 21 attempts.
Zebelian finished 22-of-37 for 263 yards to go along with two TDs and one interception. His top target was tight end Danny Enight who caught eight balls for 96 yards.
Following Zebelian's INT on Oberlin's first possession, the Yeomen defense came up big and forced the Gators to settle for a 21-yard field goal. It would remain 3-0 until the closing minutes of the first half when Sean Acosta would cap off a 13-play, 80-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run to give the visitors a 10-0 lead at the break.
Following a quick 3-and-out by the Yeomen on their first possession of the second half, the Gators would go 59 yards on seven plays to take a 17-0 lead. The touchdown came courtesy of Robert Carlisle from eight yards out. The Gators' tight end was the game's top pass catcher with 105 yards receiving.
Oberlin's first chance at points came with 6:44 left in the third quarter, but
Zach Richard's 36-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left. At the time, little did anyone know how much that miss would mean on the outcome of the game. On the previous play Mixter was stuffed on 3rd-and-1 for no gain, which led to the field goal try.
In the fourth quarter the Yeomen continued to fight on both sides of the ball, unfortunately it was just a little too late before they got things going in order to complete the comeback.
Defensively it was
Matt Richard who had a career day for the Yeomen with 13 tackles – including one for a loss – to go along with a forced fumble.
Eric Enrico recorded his second interception in as many weeks, while adding six tackles in the setback.
The Yeomen conclude the 2010 season with a record of 4-6 overall and will finish in fifth place in the North Coast Athletic Conference at 3-3.
