Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin and Allegheny went toe-to-toe for 40 minutes, but the Gators controlled the overtime period to leave town with an 80-69 victory over the Oberlin College women's basketball team on Tuesday night.
In a game that featured 12 lead changes and 12 ties, the closing moments of regulation had everyone on the edge of their seat. A strong left-handed finish at the rim by
Kayla Brandt got the Yeowomen within in two, 61-59, with 32 ticks left on the clock. Following a defensive stop, first-year
Ellen Neumann would tie the game with a 15-foot baseline jumper. However, an ill-advised OC foul with just six seconds to go sent Jill Gregory to the line where she made both free throws. But the Yeowomen would not go down without a fight as rookie
Megan Leary threw a long pass inside to
Allison Anderson whose step-through lay-up with two seconds left touched every piece of the rim before it went down to send the game into the extra session.
Unfortunately, Allegheny (4-7, 2-1 NCAC) quickly built a seven-point lead just two minutes into overtime and never looked back. Oberlin went just 2-of-7 from the field in OT while the Gators were 4-of-6 from the floor and 7-of-10 at the charity stripe as they outscored the Yeowomen 17-6 in the stanza.
“Sure we would have loved to pull this one out tonight,” Head Coach
Kerry Jenkins said. “But we are getting there. This team is making a lot of progress and we are improving everyday.”
Anderson finished with 23 points to go along with seven assists, five steals and four boards. Classmate
Kelly Warlich notched her second-career double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Neumann added eight points on 4-of-6 shooting.
Allegheny led 30-29 at the break and throughout the second half no team led by more than five points.
Oberlin (2-10, 1-2 NCAC) shot 38.9-percent (28-of-72) overall and 38.1-percent (8-of-20) from 3-point land. Allegheny checked in at 38.2-percent (29-of-76) and after a 2-of-11 start from long range in the first half, the Gators ended 8-of-20 for a 40-percent success rate.
The Gators ruled the battle of the boards with a 55-39 advantage – including a 22-11 edge on the offensive end. Allegheny, which outscored the OC bench bunch 33-8, also benefited from a large discrepancy at the charity stripe where it went 14-of-20 compared to just 5-of-9 for Oberlin.
The Yeowomen will look to bounce back on Friday night when Ohio Wesleyan comes to town for a 7 p.m. NCAC battle.
