Oberlin Football Falters in Home Opener

OBERLIN, Ohio –
The Oberlin College Yeomen (0-3, 0-1 NCAC) opened their 2009 North Coast Athletic Conference season with a 22-0 loss to the Allegheny College Gators (3-0, 1-0) Saturday afternoon at Savage Stadium in Oberlin, Ohio.

The Yeomen struggled to move the ball for most of the afternoon, compiling just 104 yards of total offense compared to the Gators' 535 yards from scrimmage. Oberlin was unable to take advantage of 163 yards on 14 penalties committed by the Gators.

Sean Curtis led the Yeoman with 21 yards on seven carries while Joey Zebelian connected on 8-of-19 passes for 77 yards and two interceptions. T.J. Salopek led the Gators' attack, completing 33-of-39 passes for 357 yards and two touchdowns.

The Yeomen compiled just 36 yards of offense in the first half, making their only trip to the redzone on the day in the first half. The Yeomen's drive was helped by consecutive personal foul penalties by Allegheny following an 18-yard reception by Adam Niec. The 18-yard reception, plus 28 yards in penalties, gave Oberlin a first down at the Gator's 12 yard line. However, Oberlin was unable to capitalize on the Gators' mental errors as Zach Richard missed a 26-yard field goal by with 10:12 left in the second quarter.

The Gators put together drives of eight plays, 74 yards, and 14 plays, 80 yards, to take a 12-0 lead into the locker room, missing on both extra point attempts.

The Gators scored their third touchdown on the afternoon on a three play, 49 yard drive to take a 19-0 lead with 4:01 left in the third quarter. Allegheny wrapped up the day's scoring with an eight play, 59 yard drive resulting in a 25 yard field goal and a 22-0 advantage with 8:04 left in the game.

The Yeomen return to action on October 3 when they travel to Delaware, Ohio, to take on Ohio Wesleyan.
