Oberlin, Ohio – Heidelberg University spoiled the annual “Franks For Coming” game for the Oberlin College women's soccer team as they took advantage of a gift-wrapped goal to get past the Yeowomen 1-0 on Wednesday night at Fred Shults Field.
Oberlin controlled the run of play for nearly the entire game which was evident in a 23-8 shot advantage. The Yeowomen triggered five of those attempts on goal, while the Berg was on target with just three of their shots.
“This one is really disappointing,” Head Coach Kristen Hayden said. “You just have to be able to take advantage of scoring opportunities and we have to do a better job of limiting mistakes.”
Just under eight minutes into game, Oberlin had one of its best opportunities to score, but
Lori Sako's shot from the near side hit square off the cross bar. In the 28th minute, first-year
Hannah Combe also had a look at the cage off a setpiece, but her attempt was denied by Berg keeper Lauren Sweeny.
Six minutes into the second half was when the Oberlin misfortune came to light as Yeowomen keeper
Sarah Grabinski had a cross slip through her fingers – leaving the goal wide open for Carolyn Gross to finish the play off on the back side.
Oberlin would fight to even things up with a flurry of shots - including promising attempts by
Lois Immerman and Sako that flew high or wide of the cage.
The Yeowomen will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Alma for a 12 p.m. tilt.
Note: The annual halftime hog dog race was won by Head Softball Coach Adrienne Davis as she may have used a premature head start to upend Assistant Track & Cross Country Coach Graham Wellman.
