Oberlin, Ohio – An all-around great team effort by the Oberlin College women's soccer team resulted in a 2-0 victory over the Mount Union Purple Raiders on Tuesday night at Fred Shults Field.
“We have had a tough preseason with some of the players battling through injury, but we really fought hard today and showed great character in getting this win,” Head Coach Kristen Hayden said.
After a sluggish start with no real flow to the game, Oberlin settled in to take control of the second part of the first half, but could not break through as the score was tied at zero after 45 minutes of play. The Yeowomen had their chances, but Raiders' keeper Kaitlyn Mallernee came up big with five first-half saves.
An opportunistic team, Oberlin took advantage of a Mount Union miscue to register its first score in the 55th minute as
Lois Immerman secured a free ball in front of the Raiders' box and found an open
Evanne Gordon for Oberlin's inaugural goal of the 2009 season.
Mount Union had multiple chances to get even, but could not cash in on the stingy Oberlin defense.
The Yeowomen added the clincher off a perfectly executed corner kick that got deposited into the net by Immerman. Sophomore
Ryann McChesney took the corner and served it to rookie
Hannah Combe at the top of the box and she crossed back over to a wide-open Immerman on the near side.
The Raiders outshot Oberlin 15-8, but just four of their shots were on goal compared to seven for the victors.
Christie Zelnik played all 90 minutes to record the shutout with four saves on the night.
The Yeowomen return to action on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Carnegie Mellon.
