Chandler, Ariz. – The Oberlin College baseball team hung on for a 7-6 win in game one, but couldn't get the sweep as Gustavous Adolphus bounced back for a 20-2 victory in game two on Wednesday Afternoon in Chandler, Arizona.
In game one, freshman
Jason James pitched 6.1 innings – scattering eight hits and four earned runs as he threw 112 pitches on the afternoon to earn his first collegiate win. Senior #P.J. Carter# earned his second save in the last three days by recording the final two outs.
However, the Yeomen didn't make it easy on themselves as they committed four errors in the final frame, which nearly allowed the Gusties to battle all the way back and steal the win.
An Oberlin miscue to the first hitter of the seventh got things going for the Gusties and three more Oberlin blunders ensued. Carter entered the game with runners on second third and got pinch hitter Chad Eul to strikeout swinging. However, the next two hitters reached on errors and two runs came across the plate, but Carter induced a lazy fly out right field to secure the win.
Gustavus took any early 2-0, but the Yeomen finally broke through in the third with four runs of their own – all which came with two outs. Gideon Sterer got the rally started with a double down the left field line and later scored on
Ben Master's single to right. Senior
Brian Verne then drove a ball deep to right center that short-hopped the wall to send Master across the dish. Fellow senior
Jeremy Simon extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a run-scoring double to left center and
Ben Puterbaugh capped off the inning by scoring on a wild pitch.
After the Gusties tied the game at four in the bottom of the inning, Oberlin took advantage of two Gustavus' errors to reclaim a 5-4 edge. In the sixth, the Yeomen would once again strike with two men out as they plated two more runs, which proved to be the difference in the end.
In game two, the Gusties touched-up Yeomen starter
Andrew Roth for eight runs (sevpen earned) in 3.1 innings as they scored three runs in the second, third and fourth innings and never looked back.
In a lone bright spot in game,
Ryan Mouch went 2-for-2.
Oberlin, which is now 5-11 on the year and 4-6 on the trip, will wrap-up its spring break tomorrow morning with a doubleheader with Thomas College.
