Box Score
Wooster, Ohio – In what could be the trademark win of the season, the Oberlin College women's basketball team defeated the College of Wooster Fighting Scots 68-62 on Friday evening.
Senior
Alyssa Clark was simply dominant in the game – registering 25 points to go along with a season-high 14 rebounds. The Cleveland, Ohio native was also deadeye at the free throw line – going a perfect 14-of-14 at the stripe. Sophomore
Syrea Thomas added 14 points, while
Christina Spencer chipped in with a season-best eight points off the bench.
“What a win for us tonight,” head coach
Kerry Jenkins said. “Alyssa led our team all night and she helped raise the level of play of our entire team. We locked down defensively in the second half and that was the difference in the end.”
The second half was played very closely and featured 10 ties and five lead changes along the way. An Alicia Smith jumper gave the Yeowomen their first lead of the second session, 47-45, with 8:16 left in the game.
OC (5-15, 3-8 NCAC) trialed by one, 62-61, with 1:12 left on the clock, but four straight charity tosses by Clark put Oberlin back on top, 65-62. On the ensuing possession Kym Wenz's triple-try was off the mark and was ripped down by Mandi VanAllen, who calmly went to the line to knock down the first free throw to make it a two-possession game and effectively secure the win for Oberlin.
The Yeowomen trailed by as many as 14 in the first half, but responded well by scoring 14 of the final 19 points of the stanza to trail by just three, 31-28, at the break. A 6-of-12 effort from beyond the arc is what helped get Oberlin back into the game.
Oberlin shot 38.5-percent (20-of-52) on the night and finished 7-of-16 (43.8%) from long range. Wooster (7-13, 5-6 NCAC) checked in at 37.7-percent (23-of-61), but was hindered by a 2-of-10 effort from three-point land. Both teams made the most of their freebies as Oberlin went 21-of-28 (75%) at the line, while the Scots were 14-of-16 (87.5%). OC also won the rebounding war 44-33.
The Yeowomen won't have much time to celebrate the victory as they go right back to work tomorrow night with a 7:30 p.m. showdown at Denison.
