Oberlin, Ohio – In one of their best efforts all season, the Oberlin College men's basketball team came up just short in a 76-67 loss to Allegheny on Tuesday night at Philips Gym.
The Yeomen were paced by senior
Jordan Beard who finished with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting – including a 4-of-6 effort from long range. Sophomore
Ryan Magiera notched his third straight double-digit game with 13 points, while first-year
Josh Merritt added 11 of his own to go along with a team-high five rebounds.
In game that featured seven ties and five lead changes, the Yeomen showed signs of brilliance and at other times their youth shined through as they committed 24 turnovers which led to 33 Gator points.
“Our effort was really good tonight, but we just couldn't put it all together for the entire 40 (minutes),” head coach
Isaiah Cavaco said. “During certain stretches of the game we played the best we have played all year, but we can't let up.”
Oberlin (4-16, 1-10 NCAC) was quick out of the gates and grabbed an early 12-5 edge, but Allegheny (8-12, 4-7 NCAC) used an 11-0 spurt to claim the lead, which they would not relinquish for the rest of the half.
However, Oberlin did steal the momentum just before the first-half horn as Magiera dialed-in on one of his three triple-hits to make it a 37-30 Gators cushion at the break.
OC scored the first seven points of the second half to tie the game and went on to secure its largest lead of the night, 52-46, with 14:00 left to play. A seesaw battle ensued for the next 10 minutes as no team led by more than seven. Oberlin trailed by two, 65-63, just inside the four-minute mark, but Allegheny pushed the lead out to nine, 74-65, with 94 seconds left and was able to hold on for the win.
Once again the Yeomen were plagued by a large discrepancy at the free-throw line as the Gators triggered 30 charity tosses - making 20 (66.7%), while Oberlin made 13 trips to the stripe – converting 11 (84.6%).
Oberlin did shoot a season-high 60-percent (24-of-40) from the field – including an impressive 8-of-15 (53.3%) from beyond the arc. The Gators checked in at 52.3-percent (23-of-44) overall and they too shot well from deep – making 10-of-20 (50%) triple-tries.
Oberlin, who plays three of its next four games at home, welcomes Denison to town on Saturday afternoon for a 3 p.m. tip.
