Delaware, Ohio – The Oberlin College bench bunch scored 42 points, but the Yeowomen had no answer inside for the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops as they topped the visitors from Oberlin 87-67 on Wednesday night.
Oberlin got a strong performance from
Syrea Thomas with 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting, while
Katie Thompson tied a season-high with 12 points. Senior
Kira Rivera contributed with 11. Oberlin's leading scorer,
Alyssa Clark, was held scoreless by the Bishops, but she did record team-highs in rebounds (7) and assists (6).
The Yeowmen (5-19, 3-12 NCAC) jumped out to an early 4-0 edge, but the Bishops quickly took control of the game and went on to lead 43-30 at the break.
In the second half Ohio Wesleyan pushed its advantage out to 20, but Oberlin fought back to get within 12 on two separate occasions with just under 10 minutes to play. However, OC would not be able to close the gap any further down the stretch.
Oberlin actually out-shot OWU 41.8-percent (28-of-67) to 35.6-percent (26-of-73), but couldn't stop the Bishops on the interior as they converted 42 points in the paint compared to just 24 for the Yeowomen. Oberlin was also plagued by 21 turnovers that resulted in 25 OWU points.
Oberlin will honor its four seniors when they conclude the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym. Tip-time is set for 2 p.m.
