Gambier, Ohio – Stingy defense and sharp shooting from
Jordan Beard lifted the Oberlin College men's basketball team to a 62-50 road victory over Kenyon College on Wednesday night.
Beard, who finished with a game-high 22 points, also set the new single-season three-point record by going 4-of-4 from long range to raise his total to 67 on the year and surpass Matt Godwin's mark of 65 that was set during the 2004-05 season.
The Yeomen also benefited from a season-high 13 points off the bench from
Omari Hall.
Oberlin (5-17, 2-11 NCAC) held Kenyon to just 30.8-percent shooting (16-of-52) – the second lowest total of any OC opponent all season - and forced the Lords to commit 17 turnovers which led to 25 Yeomen points. The 50 points scored by KC (14-8, 8-5 NCAC) was also a season-low for any Oberlin foe this year.
“It was a good team effort all the way around tonight,” head coach
Isaiah Cavaco said. “Our defense was stout and our offense looked as good as it has all year.”
The Yeomen used a quick start and jumped out to an early 13-4 edge, but Kenyon rallied back to tie the game at 17 with 12:15 left in the stanza. The first session went on to future eight lead changes, but Oberlin closed out the half on a 7-0 spurt to lead 37-29 at the break.
The Lords got within three, 39-36, early in the second half, but the Yeomen responded by increasing their cushion to 10, 46-36, with just over 10 minutes to play. Kenyon continued to fight, but would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Oberlin shot an even 50-percent (23-of-46) from the floor – including an impressive 8-of-15 (53.3%) from downtown.
The win snapped a nine-game skid for the Yeomen and gave Oberlin its 50th win all-time against the Lords.
The Yeomen will look to carry this momentum over to Saturday afternoon when they play host to Wabash College at 1 p.m.
