Cleveland, Ohio –
The Oberlin College women's basketball team gave the host Case Western Reserve Spartans all they could handle, but in the end the Spartans held on for a 71-60 victory on Monday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

Junior Syrea Thomas spearheaded the Oberlin attack with a career-high 29 points – 21 of which came in the second half. The Cleveland, Ohio, native dialed in on a career-high seven triple-tries on 11 attempts – finishing 8-of-16 from the floor on the night. Reigning NCAC Player of the Week Allison Anderson added 15 points and seven assists in the loss.

“I felt we did some things well and were able to play with them for the majority of the game,” Head Coach Kerry Jenkins said. “I am really proud of the effort our team gave and we are looking to carry that over into the weekend.”

The Spartans, who have now won six straight games, grabbed a quick 7-0 lead, but Anderson's jumper in the paint tied it at 12 with 13:16 left in the opening half. Oberlin would go toe-to-toe with Case the remainder of the half – leading by one on two separate occasions before trailing 34-31 at the break.

Unfortunately, Case (6-2) ripped off a 16-2 run to start the second half, claiming a 50-33 lead at the 15:07 mark and eventually led by as many as 24 points with 8:07 left to play. However, the Yeowomen would not go down without a fight as they scored 18 straight points to get within six, 66-60, with 1:37 left on the clock, but could not close the gap any further.

Oberlin (1-5) out-shot Case 40.4 percent (21-of-52) to 37.5-percent (27-of-72), but the Spartans had a slight 40-37 edge on the glass – including a 20-12 advantage on the offensive end.

The Yeowomen will finally have their home opener on Friday night when Ursuline College comes to town for an 8 p.m. tip, capping a doubleheader with the men's team who battles Alma at 6 p.m.
