Box Score

Bluffton, Ohio –
It was a tale of two halves for the Oberlin College women's basketball team in their season opener on Friday night, but in the end the Bluffton Beavers proved to be too strong as they upended the Yeowomen 70-50.

Oberlin shot a blazing 58.3-percent in the first half – converting on 14-of-24 attempts – including an impressive 6-of-13 (46.7%) from 3-point land. However, in the second half it was as if someone had placed a lid over the Yeowomen basket as they netted just 6-of-31 (19.4%) shots to let Bluffton escape with the win.

All in all three players scored in double figures with junior Syrea Thomas leading the way with 14 points. Senior Kayla Brandt and first-year Allison Anderson added 12 of their own. Senior Emily Chu Finkel also ripped down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Oberlin (0-1) played right with Bluffton for the first 20 minutes, trailing just 36-34 at the break. The opening half featured six lead changes and five ties along the way. Thomas' three-ball with 3:53 left in the first stanza gave Oberlin its largest lead of the game at 29-25.

Bluffton (2-0) came out on fire to start the second half as they used an 18-0 run out of the locker room to take a 54-34 lead with 14:06 left to play. Oberlin's first field goal of the half didn't come till the 13:39 mark. The Yeowomen fought back to get it as close as 13 on two separate occasions, but could not close the gap any further.

The most glaring difference in the game is in points off of turnovers where the Beavers cashed in 27 Oberlin miscues for 29 points, while the Yeowomen scored just seven points on 19 Bluffton mistakes.

The Yeowomen return to action tomorrow afternoon at the Bluffton Tournament against St. Mary's College at 1 p.m.
