Oberlin, Ohio –
Freshman quarterback David Kalgren threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another to lift the Oberlin College football team to a thrilling 34-29 victory over Hiram College on a beautiful sun-drenched afternoon at Savage Stadium.

“I was happy for the way these guys fought today,” Head Coach Jeff Ramsey said. “We battled for all 60 minutes and were able to end the season with the win, which is a great feeling for our team and our staff.”

Oberlin (2-8, 2-5 NCAC) led by as many as 10 points in the second quarter, but needed a defensive stand with under two minutes left to play to preserve the win.

After an early Hiram field goal, it didn't take the Yeomen long to respond, scoring on the very next play as Kalgren hooked up with #C.J. Holman# from 49 yards out. Kalgren finished the day 13-of-22 for a career-high 219 yards. He also had a career-high 116 yards rushing on 23 carries. However, it wasn't all good for the rookie as he was picked off three times – only one of which was really his fault. Holman, one of six Yeomen to register at least one catch on the day, finished with a team-best 69 yards on three catches.

The Terriers (0-10, 0-7 NCAC) reclaimed the lead when Glenn Campbell capped a 10-play, 60-yard drive with a 3-yard TD run. The Yeomen would once again respond, this time in dramatic fashion as senior Scott Kjellberg who was playing in his final game in the crimson and gold with a torn ACL scored on a 1-yard plunge to put the Yeomen back on top 13-10 to end the first quarter.

The Yeomen would extend their lead to 20-10 just moments into the second quarter after a three-and-out by Hiram, the Yeomen would again need just one play to find paydirt as Kalgren sent an inside shovel pass up to Adam Lowther who did the rest of the work for a 39-yard touchdown.

Unfortunately, Hiram would take advantage of a Kalgren INT that resulted in Luke Lewis scoring the first of his three rushing touchdowns to make it a 20-16 game at the half. At the 11:08 mark of the third quarter Lewis would put the Terreirs on top 23-20 on a five-yard scoring scamper.

However, the seesaw game would continue as Kalgren finished off a 10-play, 72-yard Yeomen drive that took 4:14 off the clock with a picture perfect quarterback draw from 13 yards out, making it a 27-23 Oberlin advantage.

A throwback screen to tight end Danny Enright on the Hiram 6-yard line with 11:07 left in the game proved to be a big insurance touchdown for the Yeomen. On the ensuing possession, the Terriers went 69 yards in just 3:29 with the eighth play of the drive resulting in Lewis' third score of the game.

With a five-point lead late in the fourth quarter, Oberlin was driving to score again and put the game away for good, but Kalgren was picked off on the Hiram 14-yardline – giving the Terriers one last chance with 3:13 left on the clock, but fortunately the Oberlin defense short-circuited the drive on their own 31-yardline to send themselves home a winner.

Shawn Chrapczynski, Derrick Dennis and Matt Misorski each recorded eight tackles to lead an Oberlin defense that finished with six tackles for a loss in the contest.

The Yeomen end the season 2-8 overall and 2-5 in the NCAC for the second straight year. Since 2002, the Yeomen are 6-2 in season finales.
