Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's soccer team battled No. 22 Denison to a 1-1 draw after 45 minutes, but the Big Red busted out for four goals in the second half to upend the Yeowomen 5-1 in NCAC action on Wednesday night at Fred Shults Field.

“We played with great effort tonight,” Head Coach Kristen Hayden said. “In the first half we were able to fight off some of their scoring opportunities and we made a nice run of our own to tie the game. Unfortunately, they came on strong in the second half and showed why they are one of the top teams in the country.”

The Big Red got on the board in the 28th, but the Yeowomen responded just five minutes later as Katy Holihan notched her first goal of the season with a shot from about 15-yards into the top left corner of the net. The goal was assisted by Amelia Jarvinen as she did a great job of drawing the defense to her in the middle of the box, before sending it to a wide-open Holihan on the outside.

The Big Red reclaimed the lead just seven minutes into the second half on a Jen Clemmer goal and Kim Oshita would added three more scores for the victors.

Denison (9-2-1, 2-0-0 NCAC) fired off 25 shots on the night with 11 coming on goal, while Oberlin (4-6-2, 0-2-0 NCAC) squeezed off just four shots with two being on target.

Sarah Grabinski got the start in goal and made four saves in just over 76 minutes of action before giving way to sophomore Kelsey Atkinson, who recorded two stops of her own.

As part of Homecoming Weekend, Oberlin will welcome Kenyon College to town for a conference clash on Saturday at 5 p.m.
