Series Info …
Oberlin trails the all-time series against the Quakers 10-16 … Saturday marks the 27th meeting between the two schools, dating back to 1942 … Oberlin's last victory against the Quakers came in 2007 in a 42-14 romp in the home confines of Savage Stadium … Last season, the loss to Earlham snapped a seven-game conference home winning streak for the Yeomen, as they had not dropped an NCAC at battle at Savage Stadium since October 28, 2006 against Wittenberg (22-6) … Then freshman
Sean Curtis led the Oberlin ground game with 68 yards on just 10 carries, while
Wayne Mundekis added two one-yard touchdown runs … Through the air, quarterback
Greg Mangan was 18-of-29 for 225 yards and one touchdown – but was picked off twice … Two years ago in the last win against Earlham, running back
R.V. Carroll scored four second half touchdowns on the ground rushing for a total of 217 yards, as the Yeomen defense dominated the game in the second half …
Ryan Harvey and
Scott Kjellberg each added scores of their own to round out the scoring for the Yeomen.
Scouting the Quakers …
The Quakers are coming off their first conference win last week as they edged Hiram College 10-7 on the road … Earlham is led on the ground by junior running back Nick Cummings and through the air by sophomore quarterback Dorian Jenkins … Although Cummings has not scored a touchdown on the ground this year, he is averaging 3.5 yards per carry … Jenkins sports a dual-threat look have accumulated just under 1,000 yards of total offense for the Quakers … Defensively, the Quakers are led by senior linebackers Adam LaFollette and Cale Gulliford … LaFollette has racked up 57 stops this year including a team leading 7.5 tackles for a loss and six sacks, while Gulliford has 45 stops of his own including 3.5 tackles for a loss, two sacks, and one forced fumble … The Quaker secondary is led by senior Jake Carr, who has a team leading three interceptions and five pass defenses.
Defense is the Name of the Game …
Coming off one of their best performances last week, the Yeomen defense will once again be key to the success of the Yeomen … Much like Oberlin's offense, Earlham's offense has struggled all year averaging only 18 points per game, and only 241 yards per game … The Quaker offense has also struggled with holding on to the football turning it over 20 times in six games already this season … The Yeomen defense has forced 11 turnovers with five interceptions and six fumble recoveries, and hopes to add to that total on Saturday
Bouncing Back …
After a committing multiple miscues in last week's 21-9 loss to Kenyon, the Oberlin offense looks to put that behind him against the Quakers … The talented, but young receiving core of
Ryan Harvey, #C.J. Holman#,
Robin Witjes, and
Adam Niec all had costly miscues that prevented the Yeomen from putting up more points on the board … In order to boost freshman quarterback
David Kalgren's confidence, the offense has to make plays around him … Kalgren has played well the last two weeks, and despite an INT of his own, he still accounted for 216 total yards (139 passing, 77 rushing) against the Lords last Saturday … In a game that looks to be defensive minded, any score the Yeomen can muster will certainly help Oberlin pick up its first win of the season.
Behind the Eight Ball …
Sophomore punter
Cory Kidd did a great job again last week giving Kenyon a long field to work with whenever he was called upon for punting duties … Last week he had a punt downed at the one yard line which resulted in a safety for the Yeomen defense … He also used the wind to his advantage booming one punt for a career-long 61 yards … Of his 37 punts so far this season, 12 have landed inside the 20 … With a struggling Quaker offense on the horizon, Kidd will once again be called upon to put pressure on Earlham.
Four Downs …
Through the first six games of the season, Oberlin has had success on fourth down on both sides of the ball, with its defense limiting opponents to just a 33.3 percent success rate (4-of-12) which is second best in the NCAC behind nationally ranked Wabash (22.2%/4-of-18) … Offensively, the Yeomen have converted 40 percent of their fourth down attempts, as they have been successful six times in 15 tries.
