Oberlin, Ohio -
The DePauw University Tigers scored right out of the gates against the home Yeowomen,  and added plenty more as they cruised to a 7-0 victory in non-conference field hockey action this weekend.

It took only 36 seconds for the Tigers to get on the board as they wasted no time and took the ball right down the field against Oberlin College.  Lauren Castagno scored on a nice crossing pass from sophomore Kimberly Trainor.

Oberlin rebounded with an attack of their own, culminating in several penalty corners, but ultimately they were unable to score.  After several minutes played in the DePauw backfield, the Tigers mounted a fierce counter attack.  Another nice ball was placed in front of the Oberlin net and the defense for the crimson and gold were unable to clear it.  Bridgette Shamleffer was the beneficiary and she put the ball into a wide open Oberlin goal.

DePauw added two more goals in the last twelve minutes of the half to take a 4-0 lead into the break.

Oberlin was unable to bounce back from the four goal deficit and DePauw essentially ended the game with a fifth goal about five minutes into the second period.  Two more insurance goals later the Tigers had defeated Oberlin 7-0.

The statistics showed a game dominated by the visitors as Oberlin was outshot 24-5.  Head Coach Deb Ranieri said, "You really have to give them credit today, we made a few mistakes and they made us pay for them.  That's what good teams do.  We had a nice flurry to answer their first goal, but were unable to score.  I think if we could have gotten a goal there the game might have played out a little differently.  I was proud of how hard our team played the whole way, but they were just too good for us today."

Gillian Winbourn led Oberlin with three shots on the day, while first-year keeper Emily Bigelow went the distance in net for the Yeowomen making 17 saves.

Oberlin will be on the road next as they travel to Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday, October 21, 2009.  The start time of this NCAC conference tilt is scheduled for 4:30 pm.
