Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College football team turned in their best effort of the season, but the Yeomen were hindered by untimely miscues in a 21-9 loss to the Kenyon College Lords on Saturday afternoon at Savage Stadium.
“While I like the intensity and effort we gave today, we have to eliminate mistakes in order to be successful,” Head Coach
Jeff Ramsey said. “This was a game where we did a lot of things well, it is just unfortunate that we really beat ourselves.”
Freshman quarterback
David Kalgren continued his progression of improving each week, combining for 216 total yards with 139 passing and 77 on the ground. He carried the rock 15 times for an average of 5.1 yards per rush and finished the day 13-of-28 through the air with one interception.
Sean Curtis added his third touchdown of the season and second in as many weeks, while rushing for 49 yards on 18 carries.
Ryan Harvey was the Yeomen's top pass catcher, snagging six balls for 49 yards.
After a quick Lords touchdown just 1:41 into the game, Oberlin would go 3-and-out, but sophomore
Cory Kidd ripped off a 61-yard punt, which was downed by
Adam Lowther at the Lords' 2-yard line. Just two plays later, Oberlin would get on the board with its first safety of the season as Kenyon quarterback Mike Hermanson was flagged for an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone – resulting in two points for the Yeomen.
The Lords would add a second score before the end of the first quarter as Harry von Kahn turned a 5-yard out route into a 64-yard TD. The 6-foot-4 senior ended the day with 168 yards and two touchdowns on nine catches.
Trailing 14-2 with just under eight minutes left in the second quarter, Oberlin (0-6, 0-3 NCAC) had their chances to get right back into the game as Kalgren completed a pass to #C.J. Holman# down to the Kenyon 10-yard line, but the ball was jarred loose by Alex Traugutt and recovered by the Lords.
The Yeomen had another chance to put points on the board before the first half horn as they orchestrated a 14-play, 65-yard drive that covered 4:35 off the clock, but unfortunately resulted in no points. With just seven seconds left in the half, Kalgren tried to hook up with Harvey from the six-yard line, but the play was broken-up by Justin Morgan. However, Oberlin would have one second left on the clock to attempt a field goal, but the snap went right through Kidd's hands.
Oberlin got the ball to start the second half, but would run just one play as Kalgren's 15-yard completion to
Adam Niec was fumbled and once again scooped up the Lords.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Yeomen would gain some momentum, as Curtis would cap off an 11-play, 70-yard drive that covered 4:43 off the clock with a 2-yard TD run to make it a 14-9 game with 12:42 left to play.
Unfortunately, Oberlin's final two drives would stall out, while the Lords would add an insurance touchdown and milk the clock all at the same time.
