Series Info …
Oberlin leads the all-time series against the Lords 38-35-6 … Saturday marks the 80th meeting between the two schools, dating all the way back to 1892 … Oberlin has won the last three meeting with the Lords … The last Kenyon victory in came in 2005 when the Lords edged the Yeomen 21-20 … Last season, Oberlin upended the Lords 31-28 with a dramatic come from behind win at Kenyon … The Yeomen entered the 2008 contest 1-4 coming off a tough loss the week before to the University of Chicago … In this game, however, the Yeomen would not be denied as senior quarterback
Greg Mangan brought Oberlin back with two TDs with less than 10 minutes to play… With Yeomen trailing by 11, Mangan orchestrated a nine-play, 69-yard drive that resulted in a one yard touchdown pass to tight end
Danny Enright … After a successful two point conversion, the Yeomen were only down by three points … Following huge stands by the defense on third and fourth and short, the Oberlin offense got the ball back just outside Kenyon territory … Mangan again led a superb drive, completing 5-of-6 passes during the seven-play, 52 yard drive with no timeouts … Running back
Wayne Mundekis capped off the drive plunging into the end zone from a yard out with only 13 seconds left on the clock.
Scouting the Lords …
The Lords are coming off of a big win over conference foe Ohio Wesleyan University, 33-28 … That win pushed Kenyon's record to 2-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play this season … Senior quarterback Mike Hermanson spearheads the NCAC's second-best pass offense (253.8 ypg) … A dual threat to both run and throw, he has accounted for over 1,700 yards of total offense already this season, throwing 11 touchdown passes to only five interceptions, while rushing for another two touchdowns on the ground … Senior running back Kyle Toot is the Lords leading rusher this season with just over 400 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, while catching two more scores out of the backfield … Senior wideout Harry von Kann, who is also Kenyon's kicker, is Hermanson's favorite target as he provides a large frame (6-4, 225) with exceptional hands - already hauling in 50 passes for 577 yards and seven scores on the year … The Lords are led defensively by junior linebacker Beau Calcei and senior defensive back Mason Stabler, each with over 60 tackles already on the season … Junior defensive lineman Mark Sullivan looks to be a force in the trenches, as he has already accumulated a team high 11 tackles for a loss including four sacks.
Keep Your Eye on the Ball …
Kenyon has a very high-powered offense statistically and seems to have a much better team than past years … The offense is scoring an average of 28.8 points per game (4th NCAC), and despite their one game against Carnegie Mellon, the Lords have scored at least 20 points in every other game of the season … In losses to #16 Case Western Reserve and #9 Wabash, the Lords offense was still able to rack up 21 and 24 points, respectively … If Oberlin hopes to have a shot at slowing down the Lords offense, defensive stars such as
Tyler Lewis,
Ron Rupard, and
Cody Wiewandt need to step up their games and provide leadership to the rest of the defense.
Curwensville Kid …
Freshman quarterback
David Kalgren earned Heisman Club Player of the Week honors after gaining the start at quarterback last Saturday against the Maroons … In he ball game, Kalgren recorded 96 yards on the ground, including a 56-yard TD… He also threw for 68 yards and a touchdown, finishing without a turnover… In just his second career start, the Curwensville, Pennsylvania, native displayed plenty of athleticism and composure … After showing his ability to lead the offense, the Yeomen need Kalgren to continue to grow and provide stability under center.
'Special' Teams …
Sophomore punter
Cory Kidd ranks fourth in the NCAC with a 36.8 yards per punt, with a long of 52 yards … Kidd has dropped ten of his league-leading 31 punts inside the 20 yard line … If Oberlin gets into a battle for field position, look for the Yeomen to turn to Kidd to pin the Lords deep in their own territory, keeping the Lords high-powered offense at bay.
Losing in the Trenches …
If the Yeomen hope to come away with their first win of the season, the offensive line is going to have to step up and protect Kalgren in the passing game as well as open running lanes for
Sean Curtis and
Adam Lowther … Oberlin has given up the most sacks in the conference with 15, while the defensive has recorded an NCAC low of just two so far this season … The Yeomen's rushing offense is also second-worst in the league at just 98.4 yards per game, while they rank last in pass offense (89.6 ypg) and total offense at 188.2 yards per game.
Positive Points …
Despite eight penalties for 61 yards last week, the Yeomen are still second in the NCAC at just 49.2 penalty yards per game … OC has been flagged 30 times for 246 yards over its first five games … The Yeomen have also been stout defensively on fourth down as opponents have converted just 3-of-10 tries against the defense so far this season, ranking them second in the NCAC behind Wabash (3-of-15/ 20%) … OC has also done a fine job controlling the clock, averaging 30:10 in time of possession per game – good for fifth in the NCAC.
