Oberlin, Ohio – Freshman quarterback David Kalgren rushed for nearly 100 yards, but it wasn't enough as the University of Chicago Maroons spoiled homecoming for the Yeomen as they claimed a 38-17 road win on Saturday afternoon at Savage Stadium.

Kalgren, a native of Curwensville, Pennsylvania, ended the day with 96 yards rushing on 19 carries. He actually gained 136 yards on the ground – including a 56-yard touchdown run, but was sacked five times for a total loss of 40 yards. Through the air, the rookie finished 8-of-19 for 68 yards to go along with one score, helping him earn Heisman Club Player of the Game honors.

“David did some things well, but he and the rest of our club have a long way to go and need to improve each week,” Head Coach Jeff Ramsey said. “We just can't keep shooting ourselves in the foot and need to find a way to make a big play when we need it.”

After a 3-and-out by the Yeomen on the game's opening drive, the Maroons got on the board on their very first play from scrimmage as they ran a double-reverse with wide-out Clay Wolff throwing to fellow pass-catcher Dee Brizzolara for a 64-yard scoring strike.

The Yeomen made it a 7-3 game on a 31-yard field goal from Zach Richard, but Chicago (2-2) would add another touchdown and a field goal to lead 17-3 at the break.

To start the second half, the Maroons would take advantage of a short field as Wolff would add his second TD catch of the day – this time from four yards out, giving his team a 24-3 advantage.

However, a flurry of scores would follow as Kalgren fooled everyone by calling his own number on a QB option and would scamper up the near sideline for 56 yards for his first-career TD run with 13:09 left in the third period.

The Yeomen's longest play of the season got them within striking distance at 24-10, but the momentum was short-lived as Chicago answered right back on the next play with a 44-yard TD run by Wolff.

Following another Maroons score to close out the third quarter, Oberlin (0-5) put together a 6-play, 62-yard drive that ended with Kalgren hooking up with Sean Curtis from five-yards out on a beautifully designed misdirection rollout.

The Maroons offense overpowered the young Oberlin defense throughout the game as they finished with 23 first downs and 522 yards of total offense.

Tyler Lewis led the Oberlin defense with 11 tackles and a fumble recovery. Junior Cody Wiewandt had 10 stops and forced a fumble. Poland, Ohio, native Jake Hochendoner also scooped up a fumble in the game.

Cory Kidd had another fine day punting the ball as his eight kicks covered 280 yards for an average of 35 yards per punt. His long went for 49 yards and he also placed three inside the 20.

The Yeomen will look for their first win of the season when Kenyon College comes town next week for a 1 p.m. showdown.
