January 5 – An amazing second-half effort lifted the Oberlin College women's basketball team to a thrilling 53-47 come-from-behind victory over Bryn Mawr on Monday night.
After falling behind 41-21 in the second half, Oberlin responded with a 13-2 run to get within nine, 43-34, with just under six minutes left to play. The Yeowomen continued its offensive pressure to grab its first lead of the game, 44-43, on a pair of
Syrea Thomas charity tosses with 2:42 left to play.
A Callie Jensen jumper on the ensuing possession snapped a near 10-minute scoreless streak for the Owls to put them back on top, but
Alyssa Clark and
Emily Chu Finkel combined to hit 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to secure Oberlin's first road win of the season.
Clark registered her second-straight double-double and third of the season with 25 points and a season-best 12 boards while playing all 40 minutes. Thomas added 11 points in the win and went 7-of-9 at the line. Chu Finkel was dominant on the glass – ripping down a career-high 11 rebounds.
“This was a big win for our team and I am proud of the way these players never gave up,” head coach
Kerry Jenkins said. “It was a tale of two halves tonight and we could have easily went into the tank after a slow start, but these girls responded and fought hard all the way to the end.”
The Yeowomen started the game cold as ice – converting just one of its first 14 shots, while Bryn Mawr (1-7) cashed in six of its first nine attempts to build a 16-2 edge nine minutes into the game. For the half, Oberlin made just of 6-of-29 shots (20.7 %), while the Owls continued the offensive output to build a 28-13 lead at the break.
Oberlin, who trailed by as many as 21 in the first half, was able to overcome a 16-of-67 (23.9 %) shooting night with an impressive 17-of-23 (73.9 %) effort at the stripe – with 16 makes and 21 attempts coming in the second half.
OC (2-8) also did an outstanding job of taking care of the basketball – committing a season-low 12 turnovers, while forcing the Owls into 22 miscues. Oberlin also had a 46-42 edge in rebounding.
The Yeowomen don't have much time to celebrate the victory as they will go right back to work tomorrow night with a 7 p.m. tilt at Haverford.
