Box Score

Richmond, Ind. -
Syrea Thomas connected on a three-pointer with 14 seconds left in overtime to give the Oberlin College women's basketball team an exciting 76-73 win at Earlham College on Saturday afternoon.

Oberlin (4-15, 2-8 NCAC) forced the extra session by erasing a 10-point deficit over the final 4:36 of regulation. Alyssa Clark tied the game at 66 with a triple-hit with 31 seconds left in the second period. However, the Quakers took the lead back on the ensuing possession, but Katie Thompson had other ideas than letting Earlham (1-17, 0-10 NCAC) escape with the win as she made a lay-up with eight seconds remaining to take the game into the extra session.

For the first time this season the Yeowomen had four different players in double figures. OC got a career-performance from Fran Holoman as she scored a game-high 18 points to go along with a career-best 10 boards (8 offensive) for her first-ever double-double. Clark finished with 14 points, while Thomas and Thompson ended with 12 and 11, respectively. Thomas also ripped down 10 rebounds for her first double-double in the crimson and gold.

“This was a big win for us in the conference,” head coach Kerry Jenkins said. “Once again this team showed its character by fighting hard all the way to the end and today they were rewarded with a great win.”

The game was very nip-and-tuck throughout as it featured seven lead changes and six ties. Oberlin trailed by as many as eight in the first half, but rallied to get within three, 30-27, at the break.

In the second half Earlham built its cushion up to 12, 47-35, just inside the 14-minute mark, but the Yeowomen methodically chipped away at the lead as the game wore on even though they never led in the second half.

With the win Oberlin snapped a seven-game skid and improved its all-time record to 14-28 against the Quakers.

The Yeowomen shot 43.7-percent (31-of-71) on the afternoon, while the Quakers checked in at 42.4-percent (25-of-59). The OC bench bunch also came through by outscoring its counterpart 35-19.

Oberlin looks to carry this momentum into a tough back-to-back set next weekend as it takes on Wooster on Friday night and Denison on Saturday. Both games a slated to tip at 7:30 p.m.
