January 21 – Despite having three players in double figures, the Oberlin College women's basketball was unable to upend Hiram College as the Terriers topped the Yeowomen 65-49 on Wednesday night.
Senior Alyssa Clarked guided the Yeowomen in scoring with 13 points, while
Kira Rivera dropped in a season-high 12 points that was matched by
Syrea Thomas.
Oberlin (3-13, 1-6 NCAC) trailed 10-8 six minutes into the game, but then went ice cold from the floor to allow Hiram to rip off a 21-2 run over the next ten minutes en route to claiming a 33-16 half-time lead.
“We need to work on putting a complete game together,” head coach
Kerry Jenkins said. “At times we played well, but it was too late before we got things going in rhythm tonight.”
In the second half, Hiram (4-11, 3-4 NCAC) built its lead up to as many as 25, but Oberlin didn't go down without a fight. Trailing 51-30 with 8:01 left to play, OC used an 11-2 spurt of their own to get within in 12, 53-41, with 3:19 left to play. However, they couldn't close the gap any further down stretch.
Oberlin shot 37-percent (20-of-54) on the night, but was hindered by a 1-of-12 (8.3%) effort from downtown. Hiram, who checked in at 40-percent (24-of-60), also benefited from 26 points off the bench, 17 second-chance points and 18 points off of 18 OC turnovers.
The Yeowomen will look to get back on track on Saturday afternoon when Kenyon College invades Philips Gym for a 1 p.m. showdown.
