January 14 –
It was a defensive struggle on both sides, but the Allegheny College Gators were able to outlast the Oberlin College women's basketball team 34-33 on Wednesday night in Meadville, Pennsylvania.

Oberlin had chance to escape with the victory, but Alyssa Clark's attempt just before the buzzer was off the mark.

A January Baker lay-up with seven seconds left broke over a six-minute scoreless drought for both teams to get Oberlin within one. Then after a timeout, the Gators immediately turned it over to setup the final chance for the Yeowomen.

Clark finished with a team-high 13 points to go along with seven boards. Emily Chu Finkel continued her dominance on the glass – ripping down 15 rebounds to establish a new career-high.

“This was a tough loss for us tonight,” head coach Kerry Jenkins said. “We played well early and for us to give this one away – it hurts. We just need to keep working and learn how to finish games stronger.”

Oberlin (3-10, 1-4 NCAC) had control early on and built a 17-4 lead with 11:56 remaining in the first half. However, the Gators crawled all the way back and trailed by just one, 22-21, at the half.

It seemed as if both teams left their offense in the locker room as they combined to make just 10 field goals in the second session.

Allegheny (7-8, 3-3 NCAC) took at 29-27 lead with 15 minutes to play, however, Liz Thompson tied the game at 31 with two of her six points with 9:05 left on the clock. Nearly three minutes later a triple by Jill Gregory marked the last bucket of the game for the Gators and proved to be the difference in the end.

Oberlin shot a season-low 20-percent (12-of-60), but on the flip slide the Gators were barely any better at 21.7-percent (13-of-60) – the lowest of any Oberlin opponent all season.

The Yeowomen will hope to generate more offense when the play host to Denison on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
