September 27 –
Inconsistent offense and untimely turnovers hindered the Oberlin College football team as they fell to Allegheny 24-13 in the conference opener for both schools on Saturday afternoon in Meadville, Pa.

“It is a shame when you don't give yourself a chance to win,” head coach Jeff Ramsey said. “Today we really beat ourselves with some critical mistakes. We need to go back to the drawing board and get back to playing 'Oberlin' football.”

It is unfortunate that Yeomen didn't come away with a win as they bested the Gators in nearly all the major statistical categories, racking up 326 total yards compared to just 214 for Allegheny. Oberlin also had a 254-132 advantage through the air and notched 16 first downs compared to 12 for the victors.

Quarterback Greg Mangan totaled those 254 yards on a 22-of-34 effort to go along with one score and one INT. Seven different players had catches with senior Mike Loll leading the way with seven for 57 yards.

Senior running back #R.V. Carroll# was not his usual self today as they Gator defense limited him to just 81 yards on 23 carries and three fumbles (one lost).

The Yeomen had their first six drives end in either a punt or a turnover, which allowed Allegheny to build a 17-0 lead through the first three quarters.

After giving up an early touchdown to the Gators, Oberlin was driving in for the equalizer but Carroll fumbled the ball and in effect short-circuited the threat.

Oberlin finally broke through with 11:56 left to play in the game as first-year Bryan Thompson took his first collegiate snap under center on a fourth-and-goal from the one and executed a perfect option with Wayne Mundekis, who took the pitch into the end zone for his third score of the season.

Looking for a stop on the ensuing possession, Oberlin had Gators' running back Matt Deivert bottled up on a third-and-three play, but he broke through two tackles to get the first down to keep the drive alive - which ended in a touchdown to make it a 24-7 game.

On the next possession, Oberlin turned the ball over on downs but quickly forced a Gators punt to get the ball back with 4:11 left to play. This time the Yeomen would capitalize as Mangan went up top to sophomore sensation Ryan Harvey for a 50-yard scoring strike, but it was too little to late for the Yeomen.

The Yeomen will look to break into the win column next Saturday when they play host to NCAC foe Ohio Wesleyan. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. from Savage Stadium.
