Good Defense Not Enough for Yeowomen

Box Score

Sept. 10 – The Oberlin Field Hockey team wrapped up their season opening homestand with another close game, more solid defense, and an offense just unable to find the back of the net. Oberlin jumped into the Kenyon zone early in the game, but their quick attack was unsuccessful and turned back by the black and purple. KC responded with a series of counter attacks and put tremendous pressure on the stingy Oberlin defense for much of the first half. Sophomore goalkeeper Manya Lulek made several early saves to keep KC at bay.  After the Yeowomen mounted a counter attack of their own, the back and forth action found its way back towards the Oberlin goal, and with 6:09 left in the half Kenyon scored.

The goal energized the Ladies and the pressure increased for the Oberlin defense in the last few minutes of the half. With just under two minutes to play Kenyon was able to get on the board again and take a 2-0 lead into the break.

The second half action was played fairly even with the Ladies out shooting the Yeowomen 5-4. First-year Emily Whitaker had several scoring chances, however the story on this day was good defense from both squads as neither team would score again. The two first half goals were the difference as Kenyon took the game 2-0.  KC evened their record at 2-2 (1-0) and the Yeowomen despite playing fairly well dropped to 1-4 (0-2).

This was the third 2-0 game OC has played in a row, and they will look to crank up the offense on the road against conference foe Wittenberg this Saturday at 2 pm.
