Box Score
December 1 – A halftime lead and a season-high 28 points from
Alyssa Clark wasn't enough for the Oberlin College women's basketball team to secure its first win, as Heidelberg College used a big second half to come away with a 74-65 victory on Monday night.
Off to a slow start offensively this season, Clark busted out by shooting 50-percent from the floor (10-of-20) – including a 4-of-8 effort from downtown. Sophomore
Katie Thompson also netted her first double-digit game of the season with 11 points. Senior January Baker ripped down a career-best 10 rebounds to go along with six points, before fouling out with four minutes left to play.
“We are continuing to make strides and get better,” head coach
Kerry Jenkins said. “We still need to work on a lot of things and learn how to finish games stronger.”
The Yeowomen (0-5) came out of the gates scorching hot and used a 10-3 run that was capped off by a
Syrea Thomas jumper to build their largest lead of the game, 19-10, with 11:11 left in the opening frame. The Berg battled back to get within two, 28-26, before heading into the locker room.
Unfortunately, Heidelberg (2-3) grabbed the lead shortly into the second stanza and never trailed the rest of way as they built 10-point leads on three separate occasions. However, the Yeowomen would not go down without a fight as a 9-2 run that ended in a Clark trey got Oberlin within two, 62-60, with 2:17 left to play. But the Berg responded by ripping off a 10-0 run of their own to put the game out of reach.
OC benefited from 24 points from its bench bunch and also deposited 14 fast-break points. Oberlin shot 32.8-pecent (22-of-67) from the floor and a season-high 36.8-percent (7-of-19) from 3-point land.
The Yeowomen begin conference play on Wednesday night when they play host to Wooster at 7 p.m.
