Box Score
November 29 - January Baker and
Kayla Brandt each had career scoring nights, but it wasn't enough as the Oberlin College women's basketball team found themselves on the wrong end of a 60-53 decision against LaRoche College on Saturday night.
Brandt checked in with 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting, while the senior Baker added 11 of her own on a 5-of-11 effort from the floor. Junior Liz Thompson also added a career-best 12 rebounds.
“We played much better and were more cohesive on both ends of the floor,” head coach
Kerry Jenkins said. “We had good effort tonight, and I was happy with the progress we made as a team.”
The Yeowomen fell behind early, 17-5, but displayed their resilience with a 10-1 run to get within 18-15 with 5:52 left in the opening half. A
Alyssa Clark triple made it a 27-25 RedHawks lead with 32 seconds left in the frame, but LaRoche still went into the locker room with a slight 30-26 advantage.
Seven minutes into the second half, the RedHawks extended their lead to 14, 44-30, but the Yeowomen continued to fight to get within a deuce, 48-46, with 4:25 left on the clock. Unfortunately, Oberlin (0-4) would get no closer as the RedHawks scored 12 of the game's final 18 points.
The Yeowomen out-shot the RedHawks 36.2- percent (21-of-58) to 30.9-percent (21-of-68) and also had a 38-35 edge on the boards, but regrettably it did not translate into their first win of the season.
Oberlin will look for that elusive victory on Monday night at Heidelberg College.
