Men’s Hoops Falls to Claremont-McKenna

Yeomen begin conference play Wednesday.

November 29 –
A gutsy effort and another double-digit scoring performance from Jordan Beard wasn't enough as the Oberlin College men's basketball team was upended by Claremont-McKenna, 67-60, at the David Wells Classic on Saturday night.

Beard, a native of Oberlin, paced the Yeomen with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting – including a 3-for-5 performance from beyond the arc. Fellow senior Mike Loll added 10 of his own, while Ryan Magiera contributed eight points in 24 minutes of work.

“This was a tough game on both ends of the floor,” head coach Isaiah Cavaco said. “We had our opportunities but couldn't get over the hump and we missed some chances on getting some key stops and scores when we needed to.”

The Yeomen got out of the gates quickly – building an 11-4 lead on an Omari Hall three-ball just 5:36 into the opening frame. However, the Stags crawled their way back to take their first lead of the game, 21-20, with 6:55 left on the first-half clock, but after 20 minutes the two teams went into the break tied at 30.

Unfortunately, the Yeomen (2-3) would lead just once in the second half as Beard started the session with a deuce. CMS responded by building its lead to 10, 51-41, with 9:20 remaining, and the Yeomen would get no closer than six the rest of the way.

The Stags had four players score in double figures and had 26-21 edge on the glass.

Oberlin returns to the Buckeye state to begin conference play against perennial power Wooster on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
