Box Score
November 28 – For the second straight game,
Jordan Beard and
Mike Loll carried the Oberlin College men's basketball team on offense, but this time it wasn't enough as the Yeomen fell to Pomona-Pitzer 69-56 on Friday night at the David Wells Classic.
Loll posted 20 points, with most of his damage coming from the free throw line where he went a perfect 7-of-7. Beard, who has registered double figures in each of the first four games this season, checked in with 16 points and added a team-high four assists.
Oberlin (2-2) was hindered by a cold shooting performance in the first half as they went just 4-of-20 from the floor – allowing the Sagehens to build a 32-14 lead at the break.
“It was unfortunate that we just couldn't knock down any shots in the first half,” head coach
Isaiah Cavaco said. “We never gave up and were able to fight back in the second half, but just couldn't quite finish off the comeback.”
The Yeomen actually out-scored the Sagehens in the second stanza, 42-37, but in the end the first-half deficit proved to be too much to overcome. A late Oberlin run got them within nine, 63-54, but just 1:22 remained left on the clock – virtually eliminating any real chance to complete the comeback.
Sophomore
Ryan Magiera led the Yeomen with six boards, but as a team Oberlin lost the rebounding war 32-26. For the game, OC shot just 34-percent (17-of-50), while the Saghens connected on 47.7-percent (21-of-44) of their attempts.
Oberlin will look to bounce back tomorrow as they take on Claremont-McKenna at 5 p.m. PST (8 p.m. EST) on night two of the David Wells Classic.
