November 26 – Senior sensations
Mike Loll and
Jordan Beard combined to score 43 points, lifting the Oberlin College men's basketball team to a hard-fought 76-58 victory over Caltech on Wednesday night.
Beard continued his fast start to the season with 22 points on an impressive 7-of-12 shooting performance. The fifth-year senior was also a perfect 6-of-6 at the line and dialed in on both of his triple-tries. Loll, playing in just his second game of the season, went 8-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-5 at the line en route to netting 21 points.
With the Win, Oberlin is off to its first 2-1 start since the 2003-04 season, but marks just sixth time in the last 30 years it has gotten out of the gates this quickly.
“This was a tough game for us with all the travel and switching time zones,” head coach
Isaiah Cavaco said. “We didn't play our best game, but we buckled down and found a way to win – and that is what good teams do – win when you're not always playing your best basketball.”
After being tied 8-8 in the opening minutes, the Yeomen took control of the game with a 26-7 run over the next 12 minutes as they went on to claim a 35-19 lead at the break.
Oberlin kept up the offensive intensity in the second half, building its largest lead of the game, 51-29, on a Loll lay-up with 15:11 left to play.
However, the Beavers (0-3) used a 13-4 run over the next for minutes to make things interesting – getting within 55-42 with just over 11 minutes left on the clock, but got no closer the rest of the way.
OC benefited from 42 points from its bench bunch and also controlled the glass with a 39-27 advantage on the boards. The Yeomen ripped off a season-best seven steals and turned 21 Caltech turnovers into 23 points.
Oberlin continues it west coast swing at the David Wells Classic on Friday and Saturday. First it will take on Pomona-Pitzer at 5 p.m. PST (8 p.m. EST) and then battle Claremont-McKenna at the same time on Saturday.
