Box Score

Nov. 1 – The Oberlin Field Hockey squad finished the season on a high note avenging an early season loss to the Big Red ruining Denison's senior day with a monster comeback and a 3-2 win.

Riding the emotion of playing their last regular season game at home, the Big Red jumped out to a commanding two goal lead. Their first goal came just 57 seconds into the contest on an unassisted score by Molly McCue. The home team would score again in the first frame taking control of the game.

Oberlin battled back today getting their first goal from first-year attacker Emily Whitaker on a nice pass from senior standout Abigail Brox. This resilient bunch grabbed all of the momentum scoring another goal just two minutes later. This time it was do-it-all junior Danielle Gilliam who tied the game with her first goal of the season.

With the score tied at the half and all of the momentum flowing to Oberlin, the Yeowomen came out firing in the second half. Oberlin finished the game outshooting Denison 24-14 and winning the penalty corner battle 8-5. But it was winning on the scoreboard at the end of the game that counted most.

With both teams unable to find their opponents cage in the first 25 minutes of the second half, Oberlin had to dig deep and find something extra if they were going to win. With six minutes left in the season it was a senior that gave Oberlin the lift they had been looking for. Putting pressure on the Denison defense, Brox put a ball away giving Oberlin a 3-2 lead, which they would not relinquish

Head Coach Deb Ranieri said, “I'm so happy for Prunie [Brox] and am proud of the way we never quit when things looked tough down 2-0 in the first half.” This was definitely a true team victory for the Yeowomen as three different players scored goals, three players registered assists (Brox, Whitaker, and Gillian Winbourn), senior Holly Sloofman and the rest of the defense played really solid, and Manya Lulek stopped seven more shots in net.

Having lost a number of close games this season, Oberlin finished on a high note winning their last two games, both NCAC contests. The win against Denison was also their first road win of the season. While the team will miss its two seniors, Oberlin will kickoff the 2009 season on a two-game winning streak.
