Final Stats
October 4 – The Oberlin College football team earned its first win of the season as they topped Ohio Wesleyan, 28-15, on Saturday afternoon at Savage Stadium to end a 19-game losing streak to the Bishops dating back to 1987.
Running back #R.V. Carroll#, who was making a bid to become the school's all-time rushing leader, racked up 147 yards on 23 carries – including a 40-yard touchdown.
Quarterback
Greg Mangan finished a workmanlike 14-of-23 for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Both scores went to
Mike Loll as he checked in with a game-high seven catches for 55 yards.
Oberlin (1-3, 1-1 NCAC) surrendered the first score of game, but Carroll's TD run followed by a botched extra point turned into a successful two-point conversion made it an 8-6 Yeomen advantage with 3:12 left to play in the opening quarter.
The Yeomen controlled the clock for the majority of the second quarter as Loll capped off a 17-play, 78-yard drive that covered 5:57 with a 1-yard TD catch to make it a 14-6 Oberlin lead at the break.
The Bishops (0-4, 0-3 NCAC) started the second half with a field goal, but on the ensuing drive Mangan and Loll hooked up again – this time from 17 yards out, extending the OC advantage to 21-9.
OWU wouldn't go away quietly as they added a touchdown on a two-yard TD plunge by Kyle Adams to get within six, 21-15, with 3:46 left on the third quarter clock.
The defense dominated the fourth quarter, with the big play coming on a 33-yard fumble return for a touchdown by
Austin Richards to help seal the victory. Richards tied teammate
LaKristopher DeVant with a game-high 14 tackles.
Oberlin also benefited from the punting of first-year
Cory Kidd as he placed four of his seven punts inside the 20 and averaged 38 yards per punt en route to earning Heisman Club Player of the Game honors.
The Yeomen take to the road next week in what is their longest trip of the season when they battle the University of Chicago. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. EST (1 p.m. CST).
